Druid main character with a mastodon as animal companion and Linzi immediately multiclassed to sylvan sorcerer with an elk as animal companion are the only two obligatory elements in every party I try. The two animals are amazing both as tanks and damage dealers, so the rest of the party can be whatever.

I think the main difference is that the Animal Domain Animal would be 4 levels weaker than the standard animal companion without Companion Boon (I think that is the feat name) that races the AC +4 lvls. #2. Player-generated characters can't be advisors, but your companions can still serve as advisors even if they rarely ccompany you in the field.
