Is mormonism a cult. Yes--like many things, cults are on a spectrum. Mormonism is definitely not the most dangerous or damaging cult (in the present anyway; it was much more dangerous in the wild west when people died crossing the plains or were murdered). Mormonism is much more cult-like for missionaries, whose daily lives are more controlled than other members.

Mormons (yes, I'll use that term) claim that the church is not a cult. Exmormons frequently cite the BITE model/Steven Hassan's work as evidence that the church is a cult. Recently I came across some fairly weak criticism of Hassan's work, including the BITE model, which claims that his credentials are dubious and his work is mostly derivative.
