Playin' was the jamming centerpiece of many a show in this period, and such is the case here. A very solid Scarlet Begonias stands out in an otherwise pedestrian first set (prior to Playin', of course). China>Rider is another highlight. Eyes is pretty standard 74 and not as good as the one played just a few nights earlier in Louisville (6-18).
On 6/8/74, they were very much "in the spirit" of every song they played, and they didn't treat any of them as mere filler tunes. Scarlet is punchy and energetic, Roses is slow, secretive and relinquished, Tennessee Jed is twangy, and Greatest story is extra gooey, rocking out into one of the better crescendos this song ever had.
love this show for the peggyo among others, they played this tune about 8 times all year, sparce but cool thru 74-76, before it was drumed up in 77, keith jerry and phil are exsplosive in that 1974 way, very cool year. this show is certainly overshadowed by 6/18 6/16 6/23 and probubly rightfully so. but not worth missingHalf-Step is a nice sparkly version, and before Franklin’s became the step-brother of Half-Step in the late 70’s and early 80’s, in July of 74’ they tried to pair Half-Step > Roses.
